Many people drive by, some even walk through the Russell Kirt Prairie at College of DuPage on a regular basis without giving much thought to the natural area. The Glen Ellyn based community college is home to two prairie fragments. Earlier this week, First Light host Brian O’Keefe went out to the Kirt Prairie on the west side of campus and joined a bird walk

Open space managers turn to an ancient solution to maintaining and improving prairie restorations across the region. Every year in the spring and fall a controlled burn is a way to clear away unwanted vegetation. At this time of year, the fire clears the slate to give new growth a jump start with increased access to sunlight and a boost of nutrients in the soil. College of DuPage Prairie Manager Remic Ensweiler conducts prescription burns in the open spaces at the Glen Ellyn based community college. First Light host Brian O’Keefe visited with Remic as he conducted a controlled burn
