Dan Klefstad

Author Remembers And Reimagines Chicago's Back of The Yards

This week in the First Light look around the state, Illinois Public Radio’s Dan Klefstad continues his series of interviews of local authors. "Chicago Bound" is a collection of stories about a south side neighborhood near the stockyards. Author Sandra Colbert grew up there in the 1950s and 60s, and each story was inspired by a person or event from her childhood. Dan talked with Sandra about the old neighborhood, but first she read part of a story called 'About a Love.'

Mash-Up of Sci-Fi & Espionage

This week, in the First Light look around the state, Illinois Public Radio’s Dan Klefstad has his latest ‘read with me’ discussion with an author. This time around he talks with author Hannah Carmack. Her novel blends Cold War espionage with sci-fi.  ‘Seven-Sided Spy’ is about a group of CIA agents who are given a drug that alters their appearance and abilities. To get things started…Hannah read a passage where American Tim Carroll wakes up in a strange place after a fight with a KGB agent

Wendy Loves Hook

"Hook & Jill" is the first of three books to reimagine Peter Pan and the Neverland characters created by J.M. Barrie. Before we get into Illinois Public Radio's Dan Klefstad's discussion with the author Andrea Jones reads from the beginning where Peter's friend Wendy Darling wakes up with a new name
